Pertussis begins with cold symptoms and an irritating cough, which usually becomes increasingly severe over 1-2 weeks. Symptoms often include a long series of coughs, sometimes followed by a whooping noise. However, older children, adults and very young infants may not develop the whoop. Vomiting may occur after a coughing episode. There is generally no fever. With appropriate care and antibiotic treatment, people usually recover completely.

1. If you or a family member have any of the above symptoms please contact your primary care provider or seek guidance from your school nurse.

2. Teachers, if you notice that a student in your class has any of the above symptoms or a cough lasting more than a week, contact the school nurse.

3. Usual classroom contact of school-aged children is not considered close contact.

4. ALL adults should have one dose of Tdap vaccine. Adults usually recover from pertussis without complications but can pass the illness on to others. Infants and small children can become very seriously ill; for them pertussis can be life- threatening.
