Principal’s Update

Dear RMS Families:

I welcome our rising seventh graders, new students, and returning eighth graders to a new school year!  Our school mission is to provide students with opportunities to develop a strong academic, creative, and social foundation that will enable them to succeed within and contribute to an evolving global community.  This applies to all members of our school community:  students, staff members, school leaders, and families. It is important, because we believe that as a school community, all of us are responsible for the success of our students, and we know that this is optimized when we work together.

As a middle school, we apply this mission to our own unique learning community:  inspiring students in a lifelong adventure of learning by providing a safe, dynamic and rigorous learning environment that is engaging and fun!  We empower students to become active, responsible, and caring citizens in our  increasingly multicultural and interdependent world.

Throughout my years as a middle grades educator, I have frequently been asked, “Why would anyone in their right mind choose to work in a middle school?”  What many people fail to recognize is that most of us working at RMS have dedicated our lives to working with young adolescents in this exciting, trying, and crucial stage of development. These ages represent a remarkable period of intellectual, physical, emotional, and social development and we steadfastly believe that young adolescents deserve a secure, safe, and orderly environment in which they can grow and reach their full potential.   The faculty and staff are committed to making a positive impact on our students’ lives.  In support of This We Believe, the position paper of the Association of Middle Level Education, Rutland Middle School is committed to providing engaging, relevant and exploratory curricula; the structures that support meaningful relationships and learning; and staff that value working with this unique age group.

We look forward to working with you and developing our vision for a great middle school where we learn, create, and achieve together!
